QUICK thinking firefighters prevented canal waters from flooding dozens of garden in Blackburn after lock gates failed overnight.

Crews from the town's fire station were alerted after lock gates on the Leeds Liverpool Canal near Highfield Road developed a problem, causing flooding from the waterway.

Watch manager Johnny Ashton said: "Initially we were called out to a flooding alert.

"But on further inspection it was found that it was a problem with the lock gates which had caused a small area of flooding."

Working with Lancashire Police and the Canal and Rivers Trust, firefighters managed to contain the incident before it affected any surrounding properties.

Mr Ashton said that the leak affected a stretch between Highfield Road and Bolton Road, near the Raj restaurant, where the canal runs under the A666.

He added: "The waters were diverted and there was no damage to property but it was certainly a close call."
