THE bank holiday weekend will feature a variety of events across East Lancashire to keep the whole family entertained.

Several festivals will be taking place alongside charity football matches and family fun days.

One of the highlights of the weekend is set to be the Burnley Canal Festival taking place on Saturday, August 27, and Sunday August 28.

Mid Pennine Arts creative director Nick Hunt said: “The festival is an established and well-loved event and the fact that it’s the 200th anniversary of the Liverpool Leeds canal gives another reason to celebrate Lancashire’s great heritage.”

The free event will feature music, dance, fun fairs and food as well as the opportunity to take the slow boat to Burnley.

At Oswaldtwistle Mills on Friday children will be able to take part in a mixed crafts fun day from 11am till 3pm.

On Sunday, August 28, a family fundraiser will be held at the Hare and Hounds pub in Lammack in memory of Chris Smith, who passed away from cancer 10 years ago.

Whalley Live will also be taking place from Friday until Monday and will feature music at venues such as the De Lacy Arms, The Dog Inn and The Swan Hotel, all in King Street.

A festival of a different kind will be taking place in Higham in Pendle, dedicated to scarecrows, from Saturday to Monday at noon till 5pm each day.

Chairman of scarecrow committee Terry Butterfield said: “The village should be bursting with music, families just love it, we normally get thousands attending.”

The Great British Rhythm and Blues Festival will also be taking place this weekend in Colne from tomorrow until Monday.

A more messy event will be taking place at the Rose ‘N’ Bowl, Bacup, on Monday in the form of the Gravy Wrestling Championships.

The weather will be mixed over the weekend.
