They returned home to find a rear window broken and Erskine’s blood on the pane.
Inside they discovered the house had been ransacked and a computer, a tablet, bags of clothes and a watch, had been stolen.
The blood on the window was taken for analysis and a full profile matched Erskine’s DNA.
Erskine, of Swift Close, Blackburn pleaded guilty to burglary.
Judge Christopher Cornwall, sentencing Erskine to 32 months behind bars, said: “If you don’t want your 50s to be spent behind bars you know what you must do about it.”
