BLACKBURN MP Kate Hollern has written to the director of Blackburn Rovers Football Club expressing her concerns at how the club is being managed.

In her letter addressed to Mike Cheston she said the club contributes significantly to the Blackburn economy and is of ‘massive importance’ to the town.

She asks Mr Cheston what his short and long term ambitions are for Blackburn Rovers, what assessment has been made as to the financial security of the club and whether he would be willing to meet with supporters.

She said the club has shown a general decline since the current regime took ownership in 2010, but it is this season’s “extremely poor start” that has caused renewed concerns.

“Many fans have predicted this decline to me, pointing out that as successful players have been sold off it is inevitable that without the suitable talent on the pitch it just is not possible for the club to compete at senior level,” she said.

“The club undoubtedly put Blackburn on not only a national but a global map, attracting visitors and in turn investors from across the world.”

“To this day, and despite the decline, the club contributes significantly to the Blackburn economy, both directly through staff employed and indirectly through the retail and support sectors. On this basis the fate of Blackburn Rovers is of massive importance to our town. And in a town that has been described as ‘football mad’ Blackburn Rovers is truly a community asset.”
