BLACKBURN Rovers will not have any new signings in place for tonight’s EFL Cup second-round tie with Crewe Alexandra at Ewood Park – but Owen Coyle is hoping to bolster his injury-hit squad in time for Saturday’s Championship clash with Fulham.

Rovers boss Coyle said: “Numerous conversations with clubs are taking place.

“We thought we were close to something but a couple of injuries at a certain club curtailed that. That’s not to say it won’t happen, it just may take a little longer than what we’d hoped.

“I was trying to bring in a couple of players for last Saturday, it never materialised, but it won’t stop us from trying.

“It’ll be the same faces for the cup game but we’d certainly like to try and add for the Fulham game at the weekend.

“It’s well documented we certainly need another left-back and we’re looking for one that’s got that experience of playing at the level. Stephen Hendrie has done very well to a point but he’s a young kid, who’s growing and who’s going to get better, but we need competition from someone who is more experienced and has experienced what the Championship is. Then Stephen can battle away for that spot.

“We’ve lost Grant Hanley. Gordon Greer has come in and done very well, he’s been recalled to the Scotland squad, but we stil want to continue to add to that area. Gordon Strachan (Scotland manager) rung me yesterday and asked how Gordon (Greer) has been, and I said he’s been everything I thought he would be.

“Scott Wharton has come in and done very well, which is great, but we still want to add to that area with somebody who can be a first pick and enhance our backline.

“Also, if there was something in the wide area, even a striker, and even a different type of central midfielder, I’d certainly try and add that.

“It comes down to a number of things but there’s no doubt as a squad we want to improve and if that means we have to wheel and deal a bit here and there that could be the answer.”
