CALLS have been made to improve the ‘dangerous condition’ of the paths in a Blackburn street.

Asif Hanif, of Wilworth Crescent, said the pavements and road surfaces need urgent improvement.

The 36-year-old, who has lived in the street for four years, has seen elderly neighbours trip over pavement slabs that are sticking up from the ground.

St Gabriel’s CE Primary School and Holy Souls Roman Catholic Primary School are situated in the road, which leads into Pleckgate Road in Roe Lee.

Mr Hanif, an advocate for psychiatric patients at Kemple View near Langho, said the pavement needs more attention than the road.

He said: “Only a few weeks ago the road recently had road markings painted on it, and then last week it’s been dug up to be replaced.

“The road was in a bad way, but the pavements are even worse, they’re in a dangerous condition.

“Lots of people visit the road everyday because of the two schools, so the pavement takes a battering.

“We just want it to be fixed, I have spoke to neighbours that have been wanting pavement improvements for a decade.

“The kerbs are crumbling away, the slabs are coming loose, it’s just an accident waiting to happen.

“The road will be better when it is fixed, but the pavement needs to be attended to as well.”

Cllr Phil Riley, executive member for regeneration on Blackburn with Darwen Council, said: “Residents have been drawing the council’s attention to the problem of the road surface.

“The road is in a very bad way and has large cracks, pot holes and lose pieces on it.

“We are pleased that we have started work on the road to help improve the area.

“We are also aware of the issue with the pavements and as everyone is aware the council’s finances are rather challenging at the moment.”

“But when the improvements have been made to the road we will try and tackle the next set of problems.”
