HUNDREDS of residents turned out in Haslingden for a family fun day to raise funds in memory of a Blackburn baby whose brave cancer battle touched the lives of people all over the globe.

‘Stronger Together for Princess Poppy’ saw the crowds turn up at St Mary’s Sports Club and raise around £1,300 for the legacy of little Poppy-Mai Barnard - “Poppy’s Field” which will be a children’s retreat for any youngster who may go through similar situations.

Poppy-Mai, from Infirmary, Blackburn, was 17-months-old when she succumbed to a progressive malignant tumour earlier this year which she had fought against bravely for 10 weeks.

And inspired by her story 19-year-old Haslingden resident Jessica Davies organised the family fun day which took place at the club in South Shore Street.

It featured a Willy Wonka decorated themed room filled with chocolate, lolly pops, cakes and a chocolate fountain served by Willy Wonka and Umpa Lumpas. Disney’s Belle and the Beast, Cinderella, Elsa and Anna and Dave the Minion were also on hand to meet and greet.

Other entertainment included a VIP photo booth, arts and crafts, a bouncy castle, face painting and a children’s party accompanied by a DJ.

The were also tombolas, a raffle and an auction, with prizes donated by businesses from across East Lancashire.

Amongst the guests was Poppy-Mai’s mum Sammi and Mayor of Rossendale, Cllr Granville Morris.

Carol Johnson, who helped organise the event, said: “The event went really well, everyone had a good time and we have raised money for an important cause.

“We had so many auction prizes that there were quite a few at then end so we’re going to meet next week to decide how we can best use them to boost the fundraising total.

“It was really nice to see Sammi and the family. It must be so hard for them and you can’t imagine what they’re going through. But seeing them was a real boost for everyone. I’d like to thank everyone who turned up and a special mention to Jess for organising it. She’s the most kind-hearted girl I know.”
