FOUR public servants have been rewarded for clocking up 173 years of service in Hyndburn between them.

Administration services manager, Derek Rydeheard, senior member services officer Monica Bell, parks multi task foreman Gordon Mason and crematorium technician Mick Hogg, all joined the council in the 1970s and have each completed 40 years’ service or more.

They attended a presentation at the Haworth Art Gallery recently where council leader, Cllr Miles Parkinson, presented them with certificates in recognition of their work.

Mr Mason has been with the council for almost 44 years, starting as an apprentice at Mercer Park on his 15th birthday, and said he aims to continue in his role for many more years.

He said: “It doesn’t seem almost 44 years ago since I started work in Mercer Park and took myself off to Myerscough College each week as an apprentice.

“I’m proud to be part of a team keeping our parks and open spaces looking great and of the camaraderie we have too.

“You never know I could be the one to do 50 years here.”

Mr Rydeheard is the council’s longest serving member of staff, clocking up 46 years, and he said he has enjoyed every minute of his career.

He said: “I work with a great team of people, we really are like a family here and have gone through all life’s ups and downs together.”

Ms Bell is the longest serving woman on the council, with 44 years’ service and she said that despite seeing the council go through a lot she had always been happy to help as much as possible.

She said: “I’ve seen many changes over my years at Hyndburn, but in all that time, I’ve never regretted ‘staying put’.

“I have worked, and work with, many marvellous officers and councillors.

“Hyndburn is a strong ship, with a strong crew.”

Mr Hogg, who has been with the council for 40 years, said: “I’m proud of what we do, the important service we provide, and how the team keeps the cemetery grounds in fantastic condition.”

At the presentation, Cllr Parkinson, said: “We feel so lucky that the council has such a wealth of experience and talent in its ranks and we want to thank you for all your hard work.”
