FOUR fire engines were called out after an alert to a blaze in a bin chute in Blackburn tower block.

The crews were immediately sent to the residential flats after an automatic fire alarm want off at 1.31pm because of smoke in the corridors.

The firefighters quickly extinguished a fire in a bin chute between levels two and three of Bowland House on Primrose Drive near Blackburn town centre.

Residents were advised to stay indoors with doors and windows closed while fans cleared smoke from lobbies and passageways.

No-one was injured or evacuated.

A Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service spokesman said: "An automatic fire alarm alerted firefighters and four fire engines and crews - one from Blackburn, two from Hyndburn, and one from Darwen - turned out to the incident.

"Firefighters quickly located and extinguished a fire in a bin chute between levels two and three and used a number of portable fan units to extract the smoke from the building.

"Residents were not evacuated but were advised to keep doors onto lobbies closed and firefighters confirmed that everyone in the building was safe and well.

"The cause of the fire is being investigated."
