A MAN arrested on suspicion of human slavery after a Blackburn newsagents was raided by police has been bailed.

Officers arrested the 55-year-old man, who is from Blackburn, at Railway News in Railway Road on Monday morning on suspicion of slavery, servitude, forced labour and assault.

He has been released on bail.

The investigation centres on a 55-year-old man, who is also from Blackburn. Police said they were working with partner agencies to ensure his safeguarding.

The newsagents was closed on Monday morning while officers searched the premises.

A squad car and police van were parked outside. Officers could also be seen talking to people in surrounding businesses.

The shop was open as usual by Monday afternoon.

A police spokesman said: “Yesterday (Monday, July 11th), we arrested a man as part of an ongoing investigation into human slavery. The 55-year-old man, from Blackburn, was arrested at an address in Blackburn town centre on suspicion of slavery, servitude, forced labour and section 18 assault.

“The investigation centres on the alleged exploitation of a 55-year-old man from Blackburn.

“We are working with our partner agencies to ensure his safeguarding,” added the spokesman.
