The fire was on the ground floor of the building and had spread to the balcony, fire crews said.

Concerns have now been raised about the safety of the balcony amid fears the fire may of caused damage to the structure and it could fall.

Police believe the fire had been started deliberately after finding evidence of forced entry and vandalism.

This was the second incident at the derelict church in a month after a vandals were spotted breaking in a few weeks ago.

Chris Howarth, Bacup Watch manager, said: “The fire has left the church in a dangerous state with the risk of collapse of the balcony within the church itself.

“The Fire Service would urge people not to enter the church.

“Fire setting like this puts responders lives at risk and presents a significant risk to anyone entering the church illegally and, in addition, ties up fire service appliances when they may be needed for life critical incidents.”

Four firefighters wearing breathing apparatus had to enter the church to battle the blaze after residents spotted smoke coming from the building.

Bacup councillor Jimmy Eaton said that the church was a mess after once being so beautiful. He said: “You should see the state that it’s in. It’s an absolute disgrace what has been done.

“There was an incident of vandalism a few weeks ago and now this fire. It’s such a shame as it was a stunning church and now it’s just been wrecked on the inside.”

The church closed in 2006 and plans to convert the building into apartments were rejected in 2011.

The Manchester Diocese said action will be taken to ensure the building is secure. A spokesman said: “Following today’s fire we will be re-securing the property and reviewing the security arrangements.” to assess whether further precautions are necessary.

“The diocese is in consultation with the church commissioners about the future of the building.”A spokesman for police said: “The fire is being treated as suspicious.”
