THE GRANDFATHER of a Blackburn schoolboy battling a rare form of childhood cancer has spoken of his relief after his grandson was accepted on to a potentially life-saving clinical trial.

Six-year-old Theo Power, who is battling stage four high-risk neuroblastoma, has been accepted on to the Difluoromethylornithine clinical trial, not available on the NHS, and will undergo treatment in America next year.

Friends, family and the public have helped raised around half of the cost of the £250,000 treatment and fundraising events are to continue.

Having already had chemotherapy, radiotherapy and an operation to remove a tumour, the Feniscowles Primary School pupil is currently going through draining immunotherapy treatment.

He is set to return home today after successfully coming through the first round of that treatment at Manchester Children’s Hospital but faces a further five months of sessions.

And his grandad Graham Jordan has praised the way he has handled the treatment and thanked the public for their ongoing support.

Mr Jordan said: “The oncologist at Manchester has given the green light for him to go over for the treatment so we’re all really relieved.

“We thought it was going to be an upfront payment at first but you can pay for each round of treatment so that was also a relief.

“It means we can start the treatment and if needs be find the missing funding in the interim. But hopefully it won’t come to that and we can hit the £250,000 mark in advance.

“Just to get to this point shows the fight and spirit that Theo’s got. He’s one in a million for how he’s dealt with it and coped with it.I can’t put in to words how kind people have been in helping us and continuing to do soI have made friends for life.”
