A 13-YEAR-OLD girl was airlifted to hospital with neck and pelvis injuries after a car hit a lamppost in Blackburn.

Police said a white Nissan Qashqai was travelling along Accrington Road towards the town centre at around 1.20pm yesterday and swerved to avoid a vehicle coming out of an adjoining road before hitting the lamppost in Higher Barn Street.

The girl is thought to have got out of the car of her own accord but then collapsed.

She was taken to Royal Blackburn Hospital by land ambulance before being airlifted to Alder Hey Children’s Hospital by air ambulance.

She has got a suspected fractured pelvis and fractured neck. Her injuries are not thought to be life-threatening. No-one else in the car was badly injured.

The road was closed for over two hours while the girl was treated and accident investigation work was carried out but was re-opened by 4pm.

Inspector Dave Wilson said: “We were called to a road traffic collision in Higher Barn Street at around 2pm on Sunday. A white Nissan Qashqai was travelling along Accrington Road towards the town centre when it swerved to avoid a vehicle coming out of an adjoining road and has then been in collision with a lamppost in Higher Baron Street.

“A 13-year-old girl is believed to have suffered suspected fractures to the pelvis and neck. She was taken to Royal Blackburn Hospital and then airlifted to Alder Hey Children’s Hospital. Her injuries are not thought to be life-threatening and nobody else in the vehicle was injured.

“We had a road closure in place but all roads were full open by 4pm.”

Highways staff were called to repair the lamppost which was knocked to the floor.
