A HYNDBURN headteacher has set her sights on her school becoming 'outstanding' after it received an Ofsted ratings boost.

Alison Barron, who leads St Paul's CE Primary School in Oswaldtwistle, has said that the school being upgraded from 'requires improvement' to 'good' following a review in May was a 'whole team effort'.

The Union Road school was last inspected in 2014 and appointed Mrs Barron as well as a new deputy and assistant headteacher in September.

Mrs Barron said: "It is a whole team effort, we are exceptionally hard working, together we've spent a lot of time to improve teaching and learning.

"Everyone is determined to keep going and keep improving, we are well on the road to being outstanding."

The school was rated 'good' across all inspection areas, including outcomes for pupils, early years provision, and quality of teaching.

The headteacher said that her next aim on the path to improvement is to achieve an outstanding rating at the SIAMS report for Church of England schools later this year.

She added: "We've got a new uniform to try and increase pride in students, and a new website and signs.

"We are going to continue what we are doing, continue personal tailored education, and working with parents.

"We need to let people know we are here, and we are a good school.

"If we can continue on the good work since we started in September, we firmly believe we can get an 'outstanding' rating."

The report lays out several areas which the school has to improve to reach 'outstanding' status, including continuing to improve attendance and punctuality rates.

An other point of improvement is that teachers' questioning 'do not allow pupils to explain their learning and some work is too easy for the most-able students'.

While Mrs Baron is proud of the work that has occurred since she joined the school, she believes that the school can reach greater success in the months and years to come.

Lead inspector Jeremy Barnes said: "St Paul’s is now providing a good standard of education for its pupils.

"Strong leadership is at the heart of its considerable improvement, especially since the beginning of this academic year.

"Under the highly effective leadership of the headteacher, staff are working together with great determination to ensure that outcomes for pupils are now good.

"Teaching is now good because staff know the pupils very well and have high expectations.

"The contribution of teaching assistants is especially effective."
