A DAY of fun, sport and music was enjoyed by hundreds in support of a charity set up in memory of a 17-month-old girl who lost her battle with cancer earlier this month.

Supporters of the Poppy’s Field charity, which hopes to assist families affected by childhood cancer, organised the large event inspired by Poppy-Mai Barnard, whose story touched the hearts of thousands across East Lancashire and beyond.

Darwen FC’s Anchor Ground hosted the day which saw a five-a-side football football tournament with 15 teams, a funfair and the close up tricks of Magic Marc.

The afternoon events were followed by an evening of musical entertainment after a stage was erected on the pitch.

The show featured a host of tribute acts and local artists.

Dozens of volunteers including stewards and football referees gave up their time for free and the ground was busy from 10.30am onwards.

Poppy-Mai’s parents, Andy and Sammi Barnard, attended and were emotional after seeing the amount of support the event attracted.

Andy said: “I’ve said this a lot but we continue to be overwhelmed by the love and generosity shown to our family.

“It’s been a real pleasure to see so many people here to support Poppy’s Field.

“To see so many children having fun and the community coming together is very humbling. We’re so thankful to everyone.

“Our next step is gaining official charity status and then acquiring land.”
