THERE will be plenty on offer throughout East Lancashire to keep people of all ages entertained over the spring bank holiday.

Featured events include the Great Harwood Show, the first Burnley Pride and Darwen Live festival.

The 149th edition of the Great Harwood Agricultural Show will take place on Bank Holiday Monday, May 30, which will feature an array of activities such as lamb racing, strong man competitions and archery displays.

Show secretary Rona Westwell said: “Depending on the weather, we normally attract between 7,000 and 10,000, it’s a really good family day out.

“There’s an electric atmosphere, you get a lot of people from a variety of areas.”

The event takes place on The New Showfield, Whalley Road, from 8.30am to 5pm, and tickets are £8 for adults and £5 for concessions, though family tickets are available from the gate.

Another landmark event this weekend is East Lancashire’s first LGBT pride event, which will take place in Burnley.

Simon Clark, from the East Lancashire LGBT group, said: “We are so proud to be hosting the first ever East Lancashire pride event, it’s been one of my dreams and now it’s reality.”

The event will feature a two-day community expo at Burnley Library, which opens today at 10am, while the official opening party launches at Smackwater Jacks bar from 9pm.

"The closing party will also be held at Smackwater Jacks from 9pm on Sunday Sunday will also see Nelson and Colne College hosting Pendle Powerfest, a car show with an Italian Job theme, where people can sample entertainment based on the famous film starring Michael Caine for just £3 for adults and £1.50 for children.

Those attending the free Darwen Live music festival this weekend can expect to enjoy mostly sunny conditions, although there is a chance of showers.

A Met Office spokesman said: “There’s a lot of dry weather and some sunshine to look forward to and some pretty pleasant conditions in the high teens.

“Saturday or Sunday could see small showers, but the main story is dry and sunny weather.”

This weekend will also see a Battle of Jutland Commemoration service for the 100th anniversary of the First World War conflict.

In honour of the 41,329 sailors who lost their lives in the naval battle, war veterans from Pendle will be out in force to pay their tributes.

Anyone is welcome to attend the service of remembrance, held at the War Memorial in Cross Street, Nelson, at 11am on Saturday.
