A MOORS fire broke out on land near to Clough Bottom Reservoir last night.

Firefighters from Burnley and Bacup attended the incident which covered an area of 500 by 100 square metres.

Ten crew members from the two stations tackled the fire for around two hours

Crew manager Rick Courtney, from Burnley, said: "We attended some moor fires up on Clough Bottom Reservoir at about 9pm.

"Bacup already had crews up there and were struggling to put it out on their own so called us. We were there until 10.30pm so it took a couple of hours to put out.

"The area opposite the reservoir on the moors was destroyed.

"We are not sure if it was started deliberately but in this hot weather, we do ask people to be careful when disposing of cigarettes and campfires."

Firefighters from Bacup will revisit the site today to run further checks on the land.

Crew Manager Andy Jones from Bacup said: "We are going to go up and clock check the incident this morning.

"We have had a lot of moorland fires over the last few days.

"It tends to be the weekends when more people are out on the moors."
