BURNLEY secured the Championship title in style with a 3-0 demolition of already relegated Charlton at the Valley.

The Clarets also set a new post-War record of 23 league games unbeaten in the process, beating the mark of 22 set in 1972.

Burnley have gone half a season unbeaten since defeat at Hull on Boxing Day to storm from fifth in the table to champions and landing an immediate Premier League return in the process.

The home fans had promised more protests against their owners and the game was halted inside the first few minutes for Tom Heaton’s goal mouth to be cleared after supporters had thrown small balls and toilet roll onto the pitch.

The Clarets first sight of goal came in the 12th minute when Sam Vokes lifted his shot over from 18 yards after Scott Arfield’s lay-off, and six minutes later Andre Gray fired into the side-netting after cutting inside on to his left foot.

Burnley took the lead a minute later. Arfield and Stephen Ward linked up on the left after Dean Marney had spread the ball out wide, and Arfield’s cross gave Vokes the simplest of tap-ins.

Despite already being down the Addicks were looking a threat and Tom Heaton produced a superb fingertip save to turn Johann Gudmundsson’s 20 yarder wide.

And the hosts should have been level on 37 minutes. Ademola Lookman led the break and he squared for Callum Harriott on the penalty spot, but Heaton made another one-handed save to deny the youngster.

Burnley doubled their lead three minutes into the second half. Ward’s cross was flicked on by Gray and George Boyd was in acres of space at the back post and he controlled the ball on his chest and fired home.

And two minutes later it was three as Gray fired through the legs of Nick Pope from close range, It was party time in the away now and Burnley were continuing to look a threat on the break, with Gray crowded out after Ashley Barnes, on for Vokes, had sent him through on goal.

With five minutes to go Michael Duff was introduced to a rousing reception for his 383rd, and probably his final Burnley appearance, and Tom Heaton handed the captain’s armband over to the 38-year-old.

And the Clarets completed their 20th shutout of the season as the away end flooded onto the pitch at the final whistle. Burnley are champions.
