A BLACKBURN church was targeted by mindless vandals throwing mud, bricks and stones.

Father Ged Barry, who presides over Our Lady of Perpetual Succour, described the attack on the Pilmuir Road church as ‘verging on sacrilege’.

Vandals targeted the church on Saturday, April 30 leaving mud spattered on the doors windows and walls.

Father Barry said: “Someone has decided to target Our Lady’s Presbytery and church, throwing stones, bricks and mud at the house and church windows and front door.

“It is absolutely mindless vandalism and verging on sacrilege.”

Father Barry said he was asking those in the neighbourhood to help find out who was responsible.

He said: “I would ask that people approach me to tell me who is responsible for this appalling and senseless act. I have some ideas of who might be involved, but would appreciate the help and support of the local community. “It is your parish that is being targeted.

“As nobody is living in the house at the moment, nobody saw them.”

He added that a fitting punishment for those involved would be for the culprits to ‘do a lot of cleaning up in the gardens and church grounds’.

Residents living near to the church said they we angered by the vandalism. Judith Knight said on Facebook: “How sad, my children went to primary school there and loved it.

“If the culprits are made to clean the mess up they wouldn’t do it again come on parents you must know if your child is involved sort it out now.”

Keeley Iddon posted: “It’s disgraceful.

“My grandma goes to that church and has done for a lot of years.

“The parents of these mindless scum must be oh so proud of what they’ve raised and let loose on society.”

While Emma Williams said: “Some people have no respect. Hope they are caught and made to clean it off.”

The church was also the target of an attempted break in on December 31, 2015 which On that occasion, the culprits ran off when the alarm went off, but caused damage to the building.
