A 65-YEAR-OLD man who had drunk 20 to 30 cans of lager attacked his sister when she came to tell him his mother, who he lived with, had gone into a nursing home and would not be coming back.

Blackburn magistrates heard Victor Parkinson demanded to know where his mum was before reaching into his sister’s car and grabbing her by the throat.

He shouted threats and abuse and when he eventually released his grip punched his sister about the face.

Parkinson, of Bute Road, Blackburn, pleaded guilty to assaulting Karen Burns and sending a communication that was offensive. He was made subject to a community order for 12 months with a 30 day rehabilitation activity requirement and made subject to a restraining order for six months.

Dominic Howells, prosecuting, said the problem between Mrs Burns, a retired lady, and her brother came about due to problems with their mother who was in her 80s.

He said Parkinson wasn’t happy when his mother moved into the care home because it affected the money he had to live on.

“On the day of the incident Mrs Burns had been to see her mum and then went to see her brother to tell him she wasn’t coming home.

“She stayed in her car and rang him to ask him to come out because she was frightened of how he may react,” said Mr Howells.

“He ran down the path shouting abuse and then grabbed her through the open window. A neighbour intervened and he stormed back into the house.”

“When Mrs Burns got home there were three messages from her brother on her answer phone making threats to rip her head off and rip her apart.

“When he was interviewed he said he had drunk between 20 and 30 cans of lager and effectively couldn’t remember what had happened.”

Richard Prew, defending, said it was a very sad case for everyone concerned. He said prior to going into the care home the defendant’s mother had been his carer and he was totally reliant on her financially.

“He can’t read or write and was extremely reliant on his mother,” said Mr Prew. “He blamed his sister for taking his mother away and reacted as he did after drinking an enormous amount of alcohol. He can’t remember what happened.”
