A ROAD rage driver who rammed an East Lancashire motorist on the ‘fast’ lane of the M6 has been branded ‘unacceptable’.

Footage filmed on the dashcam of victim Bob Horton, from Clitheroe, captured the shocking moment his car was forced into a spin across three lanes of the busy motorway.

Preston Crown Court heard Mr Horton was driving in the third, ‘fast’ lane southbound on the M6 at Charnock Richards when a black Nissan pick-up truck driven by Stephen Jack began flashing its lights behind him.

The 62-year-old said the Nissan appeared to want to overtake but he did not move over because of other cars in the other lanes.

However, after a dangerous attempt to undertake, Jack collided with Mr Hoton’s Peugeot 3008, forcing him to spin and take refuge on the hard shoulder.

Mr Horton said: “I drive a lot of miles for my job, as a control system engineer contractor.

“I see a lot of crazy driving, so I’d got the camera put in my car.

“I saw him coming up behind me at speed. He started aggressively flashing his lights to try and get me to move over but there was traffic at my left.

“By the time it cleared, he had decided to undertake and ended up ramming into my car.”

Stephen Jack, 59, was given a six-month custodial sentence suspended for 12 months after pleading guilty at Preston Crown Court to dangerous driving and failing to stop at the scene of an accident.

The self-employed electrical contractor of Hawthwaite Lane, Barrow was also ordered to complete 150 hours community service, pay £295 compensation and £400 costs and was banned from driving for 18 months.

Mr Jack said after his court appearance that the incident had been a ‘moment of madness’.

The father-of-three said: “It wasn’t a deliberate act on my part to crash into him.

“I didn’t realise I had hit anyone.

“At the end of the day things were quite stressful in my life at the time.

“My mother-in-law and father-in-law were living with us, they were both dying.

“The decision I made was the wrong one, it was a moment of madness.”

However Ribble Valley MP Nigel Evans branded his driving ‘unacceptable’ and suggested he be sent on an anger management course.

Mr Evans said: “People need to remember the vehicles they are in are not dodgems but lethal weapons if abused.

“I have seen people do some pathetic things behind the wheel in the 23 years I have been driving up and down the motorways to Westminster.

“I understand the frustration but to take the action this man did could have led to a death.

“This man should think about anger management therapy.”
