BURNLEY’S charge to the top of the table has been built on firm foundations and an effective front two, says midfielder David Jones.

The Clarets top the Championship scoring charts with 61 goals from their 38 league games, with leading marksman Andre Gray and strike partner Sam Vokes contributing 34 of them.

With eight games to go the prolific pair could still match the 46-goal return that Vokes enjoyed in his partnership with Danny Ings during the promotion season of 2013/14.

And while the Gray-Vokes combination has given Burnley a different dynamic, with Gray preferring to use his pace by playing off the shoulder, Jones feels it has been just as productive.

“It’s different but equally as effective,” said the midfielder of the front two.

“It’s a different way that they play together and hopefully we can continue that for the remainder of the season because they’ve been on fire.

“It was a brilliant partnership a couple of seasons ago but things move on and our style of play has adapted differently a little bit.

“We’ve had different players coming in and out. It’s good we can get another good partnership going.”

But Jones knows that as dominant as the duo have been in boosting the goals for column, the Clarets are not reliant on the front two to fire.

For of their recent starting XI, only goalkeeper Tom Heaton has not contributed a goal this season.

“We need goals from all over the place and hopefully we can chip in with those for the remainder of the season,” said the former Wolves and Derby man, who scored first in a 3-1 win over Sheffield Wednesday in September.

But he knows it is just as vital to keep running a tight ship at the back too, with the third meanest defence in the division contributing to their promotion crusade.

And Jones has praised the impact Ben Mee has made since moving to partner Michael Keane at centre half.

“He was originally a centre back but has mostly played left back for us, but he’s done really well since he made the change back. He’s been brilliant,” he said.

“Throughout the team we’ve got people who give everything for the shirt and Ben typifies that and leads by example.

“He’s very reliable and gives his all, all of the time.

“He shows a really good quality and good leadership skills.”
