JOEY Barton has described Ben Mee’s switch from left-back to centre-half as “a revelation” and “the find of the season”.

Burnley have kept 15 clean sheets this season – eight since Mee moved to partner Michael Keane at the heart of the defence.

It made for a natural balance to the centre-half partnership, with right-footed Keane working with left-footed Mee.

And Barton believes it is no coincidence that the majority of Burnley’s shut-outs have been earned since Mee was deployed in his favoured defensive role.

“All the lads in the back four have been outstanding, but Ben’s been an absolute revelation at centre-half,” said the experienced midfielder, who has featured in every game since making his debut at home to Reading on September 26.

“He’s been a real pleasure to play in front of.

“I remember him at Manchester City when I was in the first team and he was on the verge of the reserves.

“Even when I came here, he was at left-back, and I remember seeing him in the Premier League playing left-back.

“I think the gaffer said he always knew he was going to be a centre-half, but for me he’s been the find of the season, almost.”

Mee’s move came after Burnley were beaten 3-0 at Hull City on Boxing Day, at the expense of experienced defender Michael Duff, and the Clarets have gone on to remain unbeaten in 15 Championship games.

The only change to the back four in the league since was for two games after Keane suffered concussion in the home win over Rotherham United, when January transfer deadline day signing James Tarkowski made his debut and started the next couple of games.

Of Mee’s impact at centre-half, Barton added: “No disrespect to Duffo and the lads who have played in there alongside him, but I just think his level of performance has been of the highest calibre. We’re built on solid foundations and I’m just really enjoying my football. It’s an absolute privilege and pleasure to be a part of this.”

But while the back four and keeper Tom Heaton have provided the bedrock for success, Barton insisted: “We haven’t achieved anything yet.”
