BLACKBURN Rovers have signed young Swansea City midfielder Matt Grimes on a 93-day loan.

Rovers announced the arrival of the 20-year-old after they went down to a 2-0 home loss to new Championship leaders Hull City this afternoon.

Grimes is an England Under-20 international who has scored one goal in seven appearances for the Premier League Swans following his £1.75m move Exeter City in January last year.

“I’m really pleased to join,” said Grimes to Rovers’ official website.

“I’m hoping to get some games under my belt in the Championship and I’m hoping that I can help this massive club climb up the league table.

“It is such a good level and such a big club, getting games in the Championship is my priority at this moment in time and I couldn’t think of a better club to be doing it at.”

Grimes scored five goals in 62 appearances for his hometown club Exeter and was named their player of the year in 2013-14.

The following season he was named in the League Two PFA Team of the Year despite leaving for Swansea halfway through the campaign.

Should international clearance come through in time Grimes could go straight into the Rovers squad for Tuesday’s home clash Fulham.

However he will be unable to feature in the FA Cup fifth-round tie at home to West Ham United on Sunday week having featured in the Swans’ third-round loss at Oxford United.
