THE search is on for a volunteer to take an elderly dementia sufferer to his beloved Blackburn Rovers matches.

Age UK’s Blackburn with Darwen branch is appealing for a buddy to accompany Rovers' long-standing fan Keith, 83, to home matches.

The pensioner holds a season ticket but cannot get to matches alone due to having early onset dementia.

Age UK Blackburn with Darwen is looking for a volunteer who could pick him up from his home in Darwen, take him to the matches and bring him back.

Elaine Jennings, business development manager at Age UK, said it is really important that someone accompanies him to matches so he can continue to do what he loves.

She said: “Keith obviously loves watching Rovers and it would be a shame if this was taken away from him, so if someone could accompany him it would be fantastic.

“We ideally need someone with a car who can take him and have a nice day out with him. We have only just started looking for help so if anyone thinks they can, please get in touch.

“You would be helping him to get the best out of life.”

Keith worked as a harbourmaster at Preston docks and loves talking about football, canals, boats, lochs and ships.

He also enjoys dancing, walking and watching rugby.

Full training will be given on how to support him.

If you think you could accompany him to Rovers' home games, Age UK can offer free entry for you as his volunteer helper.

Out-of-pocket expenses such as bus fares can also be covered.

If you want to help, call Linda Guise, Age UK’s volunteer co-ordinator, on 01254 266620 or email volunteering@ageuk bwd.org.uk.
