A LIFE-LONG Darrener has turned the grand old age of 100, but still manages to go out shopping and play bingo.

Connie Peacock, of Hilton Street in Darwen, will be celebrating becoming a centenarian with a party at Darwen Cricket Club on Saturday.

She is the only survivor of eight siblings and has remained adamant 'life is for living' and she will not let age get in the way of her getting out and about.

Connie was born in Darwen and has lived in the town all her life.

She has two grandchildren and one step-grandchild.

When asked about the secret to a long life, Connie said: "I really don't think there is one.

"You just need to wake up in the morning and make sure you are still breathing."

Connie's granddaughter Heather Thomas said she was still a very active lady who has some brilliant stories to tell.

She said: "She lives on her own and fends for herself which is amazing at her age really.

"She's very lively and goes to Gala bingo on a regular basis.

"Her determination and stubbornness I think is her secret to a long life, she always insists on living life to the full.

"She's been so excited about getting her letter from the Queen, she's been talking about for the last ten years so it's amazing that she's actually made it.

"She's such a caring lady and I have a lot of good memories with her like going to the park with her when we were kids.

"She's told me some funny stories over the years like when she was walking back from a night out with her friends and they ended up walking into a field and falling over a cow."

A crowd of 40 are expected to celebrate her 100th birthday at the club There will also be live entertainment from a magician and a DJ on the night.

Cllr Paul Browne, who represents the Sudell ward, said: "I think it is fantastic that another lady has topped the 100 year mark.

"I think she is the third one and it is beautiful.

"The town is doing something right and I wish her all the best and a very happy birthday.

"I hope she has a lovely time on Saturday with her family and friends."
