Residents and community leaders have spoken of their shock at the incident.

A neighbour, who did not wish to be named, said: “I came home at about 2am and I saw all the police cars outside and the road was blocked off. I saw a car sticking out of the house next door. I’m quite lucky really that it wasn’t my house and I wasn’t in.

“I have lived here for about 12 years and nothing like this has ever happened before. It’s normally a quiet area.”

Sheer Brow ward councillor Hussain Akhtar said: “This is unacceptable. I have been talking to residents in the area and seeing if I can help in any way and they are all appalled by what has happened. Somebody could have been killed."

“I thank God that nobody was walking on the pavement at that time because they would not have stood a chance. As a ward councillor I find it unacceptable that people are coming in to the area and committing criminal acts.”
