FIREFIGHTERS were called to a serious house fire in Blackburn thought to have been started by an unattended candle.

The first floor bedroom of a house in Preston New Road was well alight when crews arrived at 4.35pm on Saturday.

It was initially reported to the fire service that people could be trapped in the house, but when they arrived the property was empty.

A fire service spokesman said: “It was going well when we arrived.

“It had breached the windows and flames were coming out.

“I’m sure it was quite dramatic for people who were watching outside.”

Two fire engines attended and four firefighters wearing breathing apparatus used two hosereels to extinguish the fire.

A ventilation unit was also used.

Firefighters said they thought the fire was started by a candle left unattended in the bedroom next to an open window. It is thought it could have been blown by the wind on to some blinds.

Watch manager Tony Spencer said the house had smoke alarms fitted, but they were not working.

Mr Spencer said: “Smoke alarms save lives.

“You are more than twice as likely to die in a fire at home if you haven’t got one.

“A smoke alarm is the easiest way to alert you to the danger of fire, giving you and your family precious time to escape.

“Candles should always be placed on a non-combustible dish/surface and should never be left unattended.”

No other properties were affected by the fire.
