INSTANT fan favourite Jordi Gomez has no doubt that Blackburn Rovers will start climbing up the table if they repeat the performance they produced at joint leaders Middlesbrough.

Midfield maestro Gomez capped a classy debut display by firing dominant Rovers in front at the Riverside Stadium on Saturday with a superb strike.

However their hopes of ending a winless league sequence which now stands at eight matches were dashed by poor defending for David Nugent’s equaliser and missed opportunities in either half.

But, going into next weekend’s home clash with a Hull City side who sit level with Boro at the top of the Championship, the 1-1 draw moved Rovers six points clear of the relegation places and extended their unbeaten run in all competitions to four matches.

And Gomez said: “With that performance we can take a lot of confidence and hopefully we can get a win at home next weekend.

“I think we have a team to get higher than where we are but I think we have to take it game by game.

“The first thing is put in good performances, like today, and if we do that then I’m sure the results will come.

“I thought we played well and we were in control for most of the game and I thought we should have won because we had some really good chances.

“They are on top of the league so it was good from us to give this performance as they are a really good team.

“Hopefully we can take confidence from today and get some good results between now and until the end of the season.”

Lancashire Telegraph:

Gomez was positioned at the tip of a midfield diamond on his first appearance since signing on loan for the rest of the season from Middlesbrough’s north east rivals Sunderland.

It was a role in which the Barcelona youth team product clearly revelled in.

Gomez had already gone close before he took a pass from impressive youngster Darragh Lenihan and rifled an unerring left-footed shot into the bottom corner to send the Rovers fans into rapture.

The Spaniard said: “It was a good opportunity to have a shot and I was really happy it went in.

“Like I’ve said before I’ll play wherever the manager asks me to play and if that’s the position he wants me in, then I’m happy to play it.”

Paul Lambert was effusive in his praise of his sixth and final signing of the January transfer window.

The Rovers boss said: “Jordi was outstanding and you could see that he gives us that little extra bit of quality.

“He’s a top player. He made the game look easy, like all top players do.

“He’s an unassuming character, he doesn’t say a lot, but his performance today was outstanding.

“We’re fortunate to have him and if he keeps performing like that he’ll be a terrific signing for us.”
