A FURTHER two people have been arrested after a three-month-old baby was left 'fighting for his life' following an alleged attack.

A man and a woman were arrested by police on suspicion of wounding with intent and have been bailed until April 2016.

The 28-year-old man who was arrested earlier in the week was also bailed until April.

The North West Air Ambulance was scrambled after receiving a call a baby boy was injured in a house Oak Street, Colne at 10.30am on Sunday.

He was taken to Alder Hey Children's Hospital in Liverpool where doctors last night described his condition as 'serious'.

Residents and community leaders have expressed their 'shock' after hearing about the incident and said they hope the baby recovers quickly.

An investigation has now been launched by police, who yesterday continued door to door inquiries in the area.

Det Insp Vinnie De Curtis, who is leading the investigation, said he could not comment on whether a weapon was used to harm the child.

Oak Street resident Hannah Smith, 34, said: "It's such a shocking thing happen and I just can't believe it.

"This sort of thing never happens around here and I hope that the baby is alright and recovering ok.

"What ever happened a small innocent baby did not deserve this happening to them."

Cllr Jonathan Nixon, who represents the area on Pendle Council, said: "This is quite a shocking thing to have happened.

"Normally when there is an incident in this area it is something to do with a speeding car but that does not seem to be the case this time.

"It's absolutely scandalous that something like this has happened and I hope that the perpetrator is found the punished in accordance to the law.

"It is rare that such a serious incident happens in this area and I hope that it does not happen again.

"My thoughts are with the baby's family and I wish the baby well in the recovery process."

Det Insp Vinnie De Curtis, said that it is 'difficult to know' if the baby will recover fully from his injuries.

He said: "We are in the middle of an investigation to try and ascertain the circumstances surrounding this incident.

"We have been conducting door-to-door enquiries to try and find out more information.

"At this time I can't comment on the exact details of the case or whether a weapon was used to harm the child.

"It is difficult to know the long-term prognosis for the baby at this time but he remains in hospital in a serious condition.

"He could potentially be fighting for his life.

"We are looking at the possibility of releasing more information today."

Oak Street resident James Mason, 23, said: "The police have been in the area day and night.

"They have been knocking on doors trying to find out more information.

"I can't believe that a little baby has been hurt.

"It's so sad and I hope that they are ok and this never happens again."

The air ambulance landed on a field next to Colne Youth Centre in Byron Road to transport the boy to hospital.

A shop worker at Oak Stores, in Oak Street, said: "People have been coming in here asking what has been going on.

"Everybody has been talking about it and people seem quite worried about everything."
