MP Simon Danczuk has voluntarily attended a police station where he was interviewed under caution following an allegation of rape in East Lancashire.

The 49-year-old, originally from Hapton, has previously said the rape claims against him were 'malicious, untrue and extremely upsetting'.

The former Blackburn with Darwen councillor and Rochdale MP is currently suspended from the Labour Party while he is being investigated regarding sexually explicit messages to a 17-year-old.

A Lancashire Police spokesman said: "A 49-year-old man from Greater Manchester has voluntarily attended a police station in Lancashire where he was spoken to following an allegation of rape.

"The man attended by prior appointment and was not arrested. He was interviewed under caution. A complaint was made to Lancashire Constabulary on January 4, 2016 by a woman aged 39 of a historic rape dating back to 2006. Enquiries are on-going."

Police have previously confirmed to the Lancashire Telegraph that the allegation relates to the East Lancashire area, where Mr Danczuk used to live. He was also formerly an assistant to ex-Rossendale and Darwen MP Janet Anderson.

The father-of-five's ex-girlfriend Claire Hamilton, a South Ribble councillor and Chorley school business manager, said she broke up with the MP shortly after Christmas after he admitted sending sexual texts to Sophena Houlihan when she was 17.

Danczuk later said there was 'no fool like an old fool' in relation to his conduct with the teenager, which he insisted had occurred at a low point in his life, as he battled drinking problems.

He later appeared on a morning TV programme to 'unreservedly apologise' for his behaviour. His ex-wife Karen has said she will be standing by her former partner for the sake of their children.

The probe into his conduct by the Labour Party is expected to be concluded next month.
