Charlie’s lost it!

RESIDENTS have been rushing to the defence of an East Lancashire town after it came in for criticism from a major television show.

In American TV drama 'Lost', which is watched by millions around the world, Clitheroe was referred to in disgust by fictional rock star Charlie Pace, played by Brit Dominic Monaghan.

The latest episode of the big budget series saw burned-out rocker Charlie in a flashback of his early days on the gig circuit.

His van had broken down in a country lane and the rain was lashing down.

His brother Liam tells him to keep his chin up as they are the headline act, to which Charlie replies: "Headlining? We're playing Clitheroe - the ****side of nowhere!"

But the town's residents and a well-known musician who is recording an album in the town have hit back at the Sky One show slur.

Peter Barton, who runs Rock Artist Management from Clitheroe and is bass player with sixties rock pioneers The Animals and Friends, deals with international music acts on a daily basis.

Peter, whose band is headlining Darwen Music Live over the coming Bank Holiday weekend, said: "I think in the past Clitheroe has probably had more rock groups come through it than any other small town in Europe.

"Deep Purple, Chris Rea, Eric Clapton, the Yardbirds, The Animals - they have all been through the town.

"Everybody that comes here loves it and the people of the town always come out for a good gig.

"I remember in the 70s when the Castle used to have major concerts on. It was a cool place to be."

But he added: "It's great that Clitheroe has been given exposure in such a popular programme."

Peter is currently recording material in his Henthorn Road studio with American guitar legend Jerry Donahue, who has played with Jimi Hendrix, Fotheringay, Fairport Convention and The Hellecasters.

Jerry said: "Clitheroe is a buzzing place, especially in Peter's corner of the town. He loves it here. Many people in his position would have moved to London, but he stayed in Clitheroe and has been a big success."

Lost's judgement is also refuted by Philip Knight, owner of the Key Street bar, in Lower Gate.

"The flower power generation's big gigs at the castle could be how the script writers came to hear of Clitheroe," said Philip.

Shortly after his Clitheroe gig, Charlie goes on to hit the big time and becomes a mega star.

Former mayor Coun Mary Robinson reckons some of the town's own prosperity must have rubbed off on him.

She said that far from being the 'back end of nowhere', Clitheroe was "the jewel in the Ribble Valley crown".

Coun Robinson said: "His comment was made before he got to Clitheroe.

"I don't think it would have been the same after he had been and seen what we have to offer!"

And the actor who said this spent part of his earlier career filming on location in Darwen for the BBC’s 'Hetty Wainthrop Investigates’. Small world.

'Lost' IS a fictional programme,so some artistic license can be slipped in there! Get over it Clitheroe! At least you got a mention on one of the most popular programmes on Sky One!(on second thoughts, looking at the rubbish they show on that channel, maybe that's not such a good thing!)

I hardly think the producers of Lost were specifically directing an insult at Clitheroe.

They probably just picked a place on the map that looked relatively remote and chose that for the line in the episode.

I'm not insulted in the slightest. By virtue of it's relatively remote location, Clitheroe is a haven from the a*rse ends of nowhere that surround it in the North West.

The Ribble Valley is, by far the nicest, most picturesque peaceful place in the North West and the residents should feel proud to live there, regardless of some producer putting a pin in a map!

Mmm, my what a 'hornet's nest has been stirred up. Back in 2004, it was the fact MHL was coming to Clitheroe ... complaints from businesses - one of whom was given a free pass to the gig itself after selling a jacket to one of the presenters ... complained in local press, in a BIG page spread about how it affected their businesses ... okay.

Now, some might argue that the event actually DREW attention to the place - cos, I can tell you, not many have heard of Clitheroe but they have heard of the famous hill, Pendle Hill - so it put it on the map again. Tourists and visitors were drawn there as a result of the show.

Now, it's Lost's turn. I rather think - knowing how clever the writers of Lost are; remember, this is a show that works on many levels, is intelligent to boot - that the script writers were WELL aware of where Clitheroe is and was precisely because of Dominic's having filmed in the area in the aforementioned Hetty Wainthrop Investigates. Not to mention the LOTR's connection, too.

Lost is filmed completely on location in Hawaii and plenty of places including London, Sydney have been featured on the show ... except they aren't. Cos they are CGId in on a studio backlot. Don't see an y of those cities complaining.

So, thanks to Lost - and any other show/film - that has bothered to incorporate the fact Clitheroe even exists into a very well watched show around the world should be congratulated.

Any town has it's share of things thrown at it, why should Clitheroe be any different. Or should they have done what Casualty did and gone the ridiculous route by renaming Bristol 'Holby'.

What get het up about this? It will bring the place publicity. But then it already HAS plenty of prestige, character - which is WHY tv/flim writers/producers even bother with the area. So, why not take it as a compliment that the creators of Lost bothered to include it?

But also take away with the fact that the region is famous for plenty of other things, too.

The fact the LET has grabbed hold of this now will clearly generate publicity for the place.

And it's far far better than being reminded of Whistle Down the Wind every other week in CAT to be honest.

Which is dead boring, been done to death.

I have seen the area change, the people change.

But I have also known plenty of film crews come to the area ... and why do they come to film here? Because the area has much to say about itself.

Not names, places. The area speaks for itself. That's why Tolkien spent most of his time here, writing The Hobbit.

I wonder, if like I was, whether anyone was aggrieved Peter Jackson never bothered to include the areas involvement in the 'shaping' of the Rings in the many extensive DVD extras. Not one word. Was there an uproar about that? Don't recall hearing one.

There are hidden depths to the area, plenty of heritage.

And, as someone already said, Lost is fiction.

But thanks to Lost, many will now probably wish to find this 'mythical place' called Clitheroe if only to sate their curiosity about what was said about it. Think about it. ;)

Forgot to add but Dominic also shot location for HWI in the place I was born ... that being Bramley Meade, Whalley. Been turned into a house now, though.

But also wish to add that Dom is also from the NW. So, also take with that the fact a NW actor has made it big in the global tv market. Which is something most would be proud of to be honest. That someone from their area - and he was picked for his role by P Jackson after being spotted in HWI - made 'big' and hit the big time.

And what do we get in Clitheroe? Tales of bands who cheated their way into 'reality's shows like X Factor and small time dancers making 'it big' by appearing on Simon Callow's show.

So, let's cheer for the Northerner who made something of his career and is now a household name. How many people from Clitheroe can say that?

Cos I never heard of the music producer I read about just now before making these comments on here. Heard of Key Street, obviously but ... oh, well.

I don't live in the area anymore for many reasons ... probably won't ever get to with the price of housing, everyone else from the south of the country wanting to move there.

So, whenever I hear any of the place names mentioned on tv or elsewhere it fills me with pride because then I can say 'I'm from there'. ;)

Looks like yet another failed attempt by the good old 'Sun wannabe'Telegraph to cause some sensationalist friction in Clitheroe...Great to see that you Clitheroe folk are more than intelligent enough to see the funny side of this!

Just a little point I meant to have made before about this article? That being the obvious fact the reporter didn't do their research very well in compiling/writing it.

Particularly, as it's head office is in Blackburn ... but also because of the Hetty ... connection ... or did no one ever notice how 'familiar' Darwen, Sabden, assorted parts of the Ribble Valley from Clitheroe to Downham were featured prominently in the show?

And which, if you look online you would find out. However, I digress. Not the first time there has been inaccurate reporting in LET. Won't be the last.

But, oh my. What a storm it has now created as a result. The info was out there ie Dom's connection to Darwen/Clitheroe ... logically then anyone researching properly would have made the connection WHY Lost included it.

I didn't do any research cos I got it all from memory.

But then I guess not EVERYONE watched HWI. Not the point, though, is it? I mean you expect reporters to do there research ... except they don't mostly half of the time.

Trust me, having been interviewed by a couple of them from this paper ... what gets said after makes you think 'I never said that!'

Mind you, as I said elsewhere today, LET is famous for such things. But, in the process, causing an AWFUL lot of grief for those involved.

Anyway, good on Charlie aka Dominic Monaghan *apologies if I mispelt the surname there; so many ways to spell it of course* and may hope he lasts until the end of Lost.
