And the call has gone out from project manager, Wes Hall, for volunteers to get involved in its work which includes offering hot food and drinks, clothing, foil blankets, sleeping bags and tents and signposting to support services.

The group also offers support and a friendly chat to those who seek its help.

The HTH movement has travelled around the north west and offered support to thousands of people all year round.

It has helped to house more than 100 people, offered training, jobs and advice.

As part of Operation Safe Winter, the group is looking to raise awareness to resolve the homelessness problem in the UK.

Project manager Wes Hall, from Burnley, got involved with the group because he has experienced homelessness himself.

He said: “Too many people are dying over the winter period due to hypothermia and at times of severe austerity when over one million people are dependent on foodbanks, it’s time for the community to come together and help those in need.

“We are looking for volunteers.”

The ‘Help The Homeless’ project was born from a single message posted online by Nelson man Liam Canning, 23, who travelled home from London in the storms two years ago.

After voicing his concern on Facebook about the plight of the homeless, he decided to go and give them some food – only to be joined by more than 50 other strangers who read about his spontaneous act of kindness.

The group’s Facebook page has around 8,000 likes.

Would-be volunteers are invited to join the group each Wednesday and Friday from 6pm to 8pm at the methodist church behind the Mechanics.

People are welcome to bring donations of food and clothing.
