A MUM and daughter from Clitheroe have raised several hundred pounds by selling homemade poppies made at the family shop.

Su Brass, 29, who works at William Hill, and mother, Mary Brass, 55 have spent the last couple of weeks making and selling crocheted poppies at their family shop Banana News and raised £800 in the process.

Mary has owned the shop for over 30 years since her husband, David, 56 bought the store in Castle Street having worked for the previous shop Dawsons since he left school.

The homemade poppies have become a local sensation with over 150 sold in recent weeks, along with an order being placed from America.

Miss Brass said she could not believe how well they had done and how much positivity she has had because of them.

She said: “We started the poppy making process three years ago when my mum noticed different poppy designs in a magazine in the shop.

“She wanted to do her own designs and made it up in her head and got crocheting.

“We raised £400 in the first year, £500 in the second year and a whopping £800 this year, it’s fantastic.

“Its grown from strength to strength and its so nice to see them being sold every day.

“We started selling them a few weeks before Remembrance Day and we didn’t expect to get such positive feedback.

“A big part of the success we believe is how people would come into the shop and see my mum making them and it would grab their attention.

“People would come in to buy their paper and say ‘oh what’s this? are you selling these?’ and then end up buying one.

“It’s been great to see that people are still taking a very active interest in buying poppies and supporting the charity and remembering those who fought for our freedom.

“There’s such a variety to buy these days that are a bit more durable and longer lasting and people are starting to buy these more often.”

The money raised from the poppies goes towards The Poppy Appeal and Miss Brass said William Hill would match the total the family raised.

Miss Brass said: “I would like to thank William Hill for getting the final total to £800, all the money is going to a great cause and we are pleased we’ve raised this amount.”
