The 37-year-old from Bamber Bridge who is studying BA (Hons) fine art (integrated media), now has very limited vision.

When she started at college she had to learn to read and write again.

She was nominated for the award by her partner Roger Livesey.

She said: “Being awarded the Most Inspirational Person award was great – it was the last award of the evening to be announced and I had no idea that it was going to be me receiving it.

“Originally I was nominated in a different category and they found my story inspiring and moved me into the main award position.

“I got offers from different courses and universities but chose Blackburn College because it is a good course and I knew it would be easier to study closer to home.

“I’ve really enjoyed learning different skills and meeting new people on the course. It’s great to have lots of people taking an interest in my work.

“I’d like to convey my thanks to the staff in the both Blackburn College’s and University Centre at Blackburn College’s creative art teams in helping me being shortlisted.”

Mrs Raith started at the college on a level three art and design foundation diploma and then progressed onto the fine art degree.

The college has said that she is now acting as an ambassador to other disabled and mature students.

Joanna Sperryn-Jones, who is a course leader at the college, said: “Justine has worked incredibly hard during her time at Blackburn College.

“It’s obviously incredibly difficult as an artist if you have poor eyesight but Justine is managing to create some superb pieces including landscape paintings.

“She has been incredibly supportive to other students on the course and has made great friends.

“I’m really proud she has received Galloway’s Most Inspirational Person award.”
