THE release of a video depicting the last moments of two young men as their speeding vehicle crashed has been backed by campaigning Blackburn father Terry Hannon.

He and his wife Ann’s 22-year-old son Matthew died after crashing in January 2006 car racing along the town’s Livesey Branch Road.

They helped the Lancashire Telegraph launch the Wasted Lives campaign in 2007 calling for tougher training for drivers under 25.

Last week the parents of Kyle Careford, 20, and his friend Michael Owen, 21, allowed the release of the dramatic footage.

It shows the pair speeding through the Sussex countryside in a red Renault Clio at up to 90mph before the crash which killed both of them.

Speaking after their inquest, Michael’s mother Kat said: “If all this stops one person from making the same mistake, then some good has come from showing this video.”

The inquest heard the two friends, from Kent, had both taken a cocktail of prescribed and illegal drugs.

Mr Hannon said: “My heart goes out to the parents of these two young men.

“Ann and I went through the same grieving process.

“Hopefully, the video will renew the pressure on the government to finally do something about this and finally act on the Wasted Lives campaign.

“The circumstances of their deaths are slightly different but it is a result of the same young, male macho high-speed driving culture .”

The Wasted Lives’ campaign calls for a graduated licence for under 25s, restrictions on their driving, and a two-part test with modules including driving at night and on dual carriageways.
