SHAMELESS fly-tippers have been caught red-handed on camera as they deliberately dumped rubbish from a lorry in a residential back-alley.

The shameless pair were photographed by angry residents less than a month after the council spent five weeks clearing up the area.

Blackburn with Darwen Council despatched an emergency response team to the alley behind Addison Street in Wensley Fold to remove the putrid mess of household waste, rubble, wood and mattresses.

Borough environment chief Jim Smith branded the tipping ‘disgraceful’, condemning the ‘sheer audacity’ of dumping the rubbish.

Other back streets and open ground in Wensley Fold are also littered with old furniture and debris, with a white van also spotted bringing rubbish to dump in the area last week.

It comes after a special team, which also gathers intelligence of suspected fly-tippers and mounts prosecutions, cleared the area.

One Addison Street resident said: “It is shocking that someone would just do this.

“We try to keep the area clean and tidy and then people like this have no regard for other people’s neighbourhoods.

“The council acted fast in this case removed the waste within 48 hours.”

Cllr Smith, who is spearheading a drive against fly-tippers which has seen six successful prosecutions in two months, said: “This is absolutely disgraceful behaviour and I would like to thank the person who tried to stop this happening.

“Any information we can get to find this lorry and the driver would help us take action against this shameful act.

“I am shocked by the sheer audacity of someone coming into a back alley in daylight to commit this brazen and criminal act.

“This shameless behaviour is made worse by the work the council and residents have done over five weeks in a major exercise the clean up the area.

“The fly-tippers have no regard for the health, safety and quality of life of law-abiding householders and are turning the neighbourhoods into a foul and illegal tip.

“This council will always take legal action against people who deliberately try to make our borough an untidy to place to be.”

Cllr Quesir Mahmood said: “This is disgusting.

“We have been working with resident for weeks to clean up the area and this happens.

“Only last week I reported a white van dumping rubbish around Addison Street.

“ I hope they are caught and made an example of.”

Blackburn with Darwen council leader and Wensley Fold Councillor Mohammed Khan said: “There appear to have been two people involved in dumping this rubbish in the back alley between Addison Street and Whitehead Street.

“I have reported it to borough environment director Tony Watson so hopefully the photographic evidence will enable out officers to catch those responsible.

“They are brazen, arrogant and shameless and need to be caught, prosecuted and punished.”

Borough Tory leader Mike Lee said: “I hope the lorry and its owners can be identified from the photographs and they get a huge fine and community service clearing up rubbish for the council.”

Cllr Smith revealed that the borough had mounted six successful prosecutions against those identified fly-tipping in Blackburn and Darwen since the start of September The prosecutions resulted in penalties totalling £2,399 and criminal convictions for all the offenders.

The illegal dumping took place in Fishmoor Drive, Shakeshaft Street, Rockville Street, Vale Street and Sandringham Street.
