RIBBLE Valley MP Nigel Evans says the association with only men drinking beer has been ‘shattered’ after a tour of a Samlesbury Brewery to learn the art of making beer.

Ab InBev, which invited the MP to view its brewery, said figures from the Office of National Statistics showed 40 per cent of UK women over 25-years-old enjoyed a beer last month.

Research by Flyresearch in September showed beer was the most popular drink among UK women, topping Prosecco, cocktails and gin.

Mr Evans said the research was proof the stigma of women drinking beer had been shattered.

He said: “ More and more women are taking part in beer festivals and so they should.

“Beer should be enjoyed by both sexes and not be dominated by men.”

Mr Evans was greeted by members of Ab InBev brewery in Cuerdale Lane.

He was given a guided tour of the facility and was shown how beers are brewed.

After the tour, Mr Evans rolled up his sleeves and ‘mashed’ the day’s brew with guidance from Brewery Manager Chris l’Anson. This is the first stage in the brewing process.

After this he mixed malted barley with water and heated the mixture to form the beer.

Mr Evans also then got the chance to try out a sample of beer and poured a pint as part of a tasting panel.

The visit was part of a nationwide scheme organised by the All-Party Parliamentary Beer Group which was set up in 1993 to increase understanding of the social, cultural and historic role of brewing and pubs in the UK.

The scheme encourages MPs to visit their local brewery and learn about the importance of the sector and to the local and national economy.

Vice-chairman of the group, Mr Evans said he was delighted to see how beer is created.

He said: “It was fascinating to meet the AB InBev team at the brewery.

“It’s one of the biggest brewers in the world with a lot of workers who have excellent brewing skills.

“It’s very beneficial for having such a big employer on our doorstep as they have a big role in the local area.”
