PLANS to develop the former Britannia Mill site next to the Leeds-Liverpool Canal in Rishton are set to go before town hall chiefs.

The proposal is to build 47 houses and eight apartments after fully demolishing the derelict mill structure at the end of Bridge Street.

These include two- and three-bedroom houses, townhouses with internal garages and one- and two-bedroom apartments.

As part of the development it is proposed to demolish the existing dwellings fronting Spring Street a build 11 new homes, using materials to maintain the character of the surrounding area. There will also be provision for 50 parking spaces.

A Supplementary Planning Document, drawn up on behalf of the council to cover redevelopment of the whole canalside area, stated: “The objectives are to uplift and regenerate this area of Rishton through the development of derelict and under-used sites.”

Earlier this year, residents were given the chance to submit their views on the ambitious multi-million pound plan to regenerate the area, which involves shops and a park.

Landscaping and public realm works would also be carried out along the canal.
