MEMBERS of the Asian community joined a host of dignitaries in Accrington to celebrate Pakistan Independence Day.

The event marked the 68th anniversary of the country’s independence and featured talks and presentations.

In attendance were Mayor of Hyndburn, Councillor Marlene Haworth, and Mayor of Pendle, Councillor Nawaz Ahmed, as well as Hyndburn MP Graham Jones.

Councillor Munsif Dad, who helped organise the event, said: “We underlined how the country came into existence, why there was a need for independence and the important dates.

“After that we had some speeches which talked about the contribution the Pakistan community is making.”

The groups involved included MMA Accrington, which helps educate youngsters about sport through mixed martial arts, hosts activities and volunteers for local projects.

Representatives from Scaitcliffe Community Centre discussed the services they provide, with support from Job Centre Plus, such as luncheon clubs and health and welfare workshops.

The Saheli Conection, who hosted the event in their Charter Hall, also revealed its work, which includes archery courses, Islamic education and healthy pursuits for the over 50s.

More than 80 people turned up to the event organised by the Pakistan and Kashmir Friends Association and the Scaitcliffe Centre, and they were provided with a packed lunch.

Cllr Dad added: “It’s very important that the Pakistan community understand how the country came into existence.

“We need to teach our children this history; it’s part of our culture and heritage.

“We are now British Pakistanis and some of us have lived in this country for 50 years.

“We need to remember where we came from and celebrate that, and also understand the society we have adopted.”

Pakistan gained independence from British rule in August 1947.

The main ceremony takes place in Islamabad, where the national flag is hoisted at the presidential and parliament buildings.
