A PENDLE man with a rare condition that means he’s at risk of developing skin cancer is running his first marathon to raise awareness and funds.

Scott Boardman, from Earby, will tackle the 26.2mile course around Chester in October.

The 22-year-old said: “At the age of 14 I was diagnosed with Gorlin Syndrome, which means I am prone to developing common and usually non-life-threatening skin cancers.

“Seven years and numerous operations later, this is something I have come to terms with.”

Scott got hooked on running after entering a 10km race. He joined Barlick Fell Runners and is now a regular on the hills around his home village.

“In other sports you compete against other people, but with running you are competing against yourself,” he said.

“I never thought I’d get into it as I used to hate athletics at school, but I have found it’s a great way to push myself and explore beautiful East Lancashire.”

Despite his healthy lifestyle, the former West Craven High School pupil still has to take extra care about sun exposure and has regular check-ups.

“The main focus is when the UV levels are high,” he added.

Scott has run three half marathons in preparation for the big race and is clocking up to 40 miles a week.

He said: “I did the Rochdale Half Marathon last weekend, which had some tough hills, and with eight or nine weeks’ training behind me I’m feeling pretty confident.
