Jubilee Street will be shut to traffic between Darwen Street and Bridge Street for resurfacing work.

Access to Pilkington Street, the Youth Zone and car parks will remain open while the work is completed.

Advanced warning signage is now in place.

The following Monday, Jubilee Street will revert to one way from Darwen Street but eventually buses and taxis will be allowed to travel from Railway Road and Bridge Street in the other direction.

The resurfacing work is needed because of the damage done by heavy plant and lorries working on the £34 million Cathedral Quarter development which is still on target for completion and handover by the end of next month.

Further disruption is possible because of construction of the remaining section of the bus interchange which will lead to changes in the lane discipline on Railway Road opposite the railway station.

Blackburn with Darwen Council and Eric Wright Construction bosses hope to avoid single-file one-way traffic and traffic light controls during this work due to be completed by the end of September.

The interchange will then be operational and traffic flows on Railway Road should move freely.

Footway works are also progressing on Jubilee Street to restore the pavements for pedestrians.

The diversions for the closure will take traffic coming from Darwen Street up to Montague Street and Barbara Castle Way to access the Mall and Railway Road.

Borough regeneration deputy executive member Jamie Groves said: “The road will be closed for the full week.

“It was scheduled to be carried out for the summer holidays to minimise disruption but we apologise for inconvenience.”

Tony Duckworth, president of Blackburn and District Chamber of Trade said: “Businesses have been devastated by months of mess and they need to be completed as soon as possible.”
