ANIMAL rights campaigners have pledged a £1,000 reward to track down the attackers of two alpacas terrorised at an East Lancashires care home.

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) has put up the cash offer in the wake of an attack which saw alpacas Bill and Ben at the Danesmoor home in Haslingden on Sunday, August 2.

CCTV footage showed the two creatures being chased with a broken chair leg and having plastic chairs and a wooden bench hurled at them as they darted for cover.

Elisa Allen, PETA spokesman, said: “It’s imperative that any community faced with a sadistic and violent act such as this take measures to find the culprits and bring them to justice.

“Animal abusers are a danger to everyone – they take their issues out on whoever is available to them, human or non-human, and must be caught before they act again.”

The animal charity has offered the reward in the event of the arrest and conviction of the pair, who were caught on film after breaking into a compound at the Helmshore Road premises.

Pc Claire Scott, the neighbourhood beat manager for the Haslingden area, has described the attack, which did not leave the animals physically harmed, as ‘mindless’ and called on the local community to step in and suggest who may be responsible.

An appeal for the alpacas’ attacker has gone viral on the internet, after the footage was released by Lancashire Police, and the two-minute clip has been shared by thousands of online users, leading to hopes that the two intruders can be identified.

Anyone with information about the case is asked to contact police on 01706 237367 or e-mail 3944@lancashire.pnn.police.uk and reference log number 1503.
