RESIDENTS are calling for action to stop fly-tipping at a disused bus stop and turning circle which is attracting vermin.

Householders in Sunnybower Blackburn are disgusted and angry at the rubbish dumped there which includes foodstuff remains and even bags of offal.

They have raised the issue with local Little Harwood councillors, calling for security measures possibly including CCTV, warning signs and increased patrols by police officers and borough officials.

Blackburn with Darwen environment boss Jim Smith said he would look at spending money recently allocated for CCTV and signs at the former 14 bus terminal on Whalley Old Road.

Sunnybower resident Jean Pickup, 73, said: “This a real problem. It’s disgusting.

“People just come up here and dump rubbish and throw food out of car windows. It’s unhealthy and dangerous.

“It attracts foxes, rats and other vermin as we are right on the edge of town by the countryside.

“This is a nice area with quite of lot of elderly residents who have to clear it up nearly every day.

“Earlier this week it was bags of rubbish with eggs and foodstuffs which were torn open by some animals.

“Recently there was a bag full of what looked like butcher’s offal which was ripped open by what looked like a rat of foxes.

“It smelt disgusting and one of the council staff sent up to remove it ended up throwing up it was so bad.

“The rubbish is often found by dog walker early in the morning and there’s even been what looks like drug remains.

“We have contacted out local Little Harwood councillor Pat McFall to get something done.

“We’d like to see something like CCTV cameras put on the bus shelter or at least some signs warning it is illegal and outlining the fines and penalties for dumping bags of rubbish.

“Locals would also like to see more patrols by the police and council officials to try and deter people from doing it.”

Cllr Smith said he would definitely look into the issue.

He said: “I know the bus shelter and turning circle well.

“We have been allocated some money for more CCTV cameras and warning signs and will look at whether this location is suitable for using some of it.

“Certainly we will look at increasing patrols in the area with the police.

“Fly-tipping is unhealthy, unsightly and illegal and we will prosecute anyone caught doing it.

Cllr McFall said: “I am aware of this problem. I have contacted the officer.”
