THE story of a driver whose ‘pride and joy’ was hit in a car park is a familiar tale according to the RAC.

Lee Sargeson had parked his 2015 Audi A4, which he bought new in April, at Sainsbury’s in Preston Old Road, Blackburn, but returned to find extensive damage to the driver’s side of the car.

The incident involving the Lower Darwen resident’s motor was captured on CCTV.

It shows a woman parking a white Fiat Punto close to the front door of the store. When she returns from visiting the store she reverses at an angle and appears to hit the side of the parked Audi.

She is filmed getting out and surveying the damage for a moment before driving off towards Buncer Lane, the direction from which she had come.

Now the nationwide car insurer has said that it is common for these types of accidents to happen.

A spokesman said: “Accidents of this nature are common in car parks across the country.

“If a driver hits another car and then drives off they are committing a criminal act.

“They obviously should not do it and they will have to pay the cost in more ways than one.”

The investigation into the incident in Blackburn, which happened on Monday, June 22, is still on-going and no arrests have yet been made.

One Rossendale driver recently returned to his car to find the front wing dented and scratched, and was surprised to find a note left on it.

He said: “A young lad had accidentally reversed into my car but was good enough to leave his details.

“I phoned him and he was very apologetic and his family told me to book the car in and they would look after the bill.

“It restored my faith in human kindness. I told them it was very refreshing to see such honesty in this day and age.

“It is the people who don’t stop who are driving up insurance premiums by forcing motorists to claim.”

Anybody with information about the car park incident should call police on 101.
