A DISCARDED cigarette caused a shed to go up in flames in Bacup.

Two fire engines went to a house in Thorn Crescent at around 12.15pm on Sunday to find a shed alight.

Crew manager Andy Jones said: “The shed was damaged beyond repair.

“The cause of the fire was deemed to have been caused by a discarded cigarette, igniting an accumulation of rubbish from a neighbouring property which then spread to the shed.

“We advise that people discard their cigarettes responsibly by ensuring that they are fully extinguished before they are discarded and to ensure that you do not store large amounts of rubbish within your gardens due to the potential of this igniting and then causing a considerable amount of damage once the fire spreads.”
