A MONSTROUS make-up masterpiece has earned one Blackburn College student a chance to be crowned the best in Britain.

Katie Martin created an amazing body art extravaganza inspired by Hollywood smash-hit film Jurassic Park.

And the judges were so impressed with what they saw, they named her top of her regional category.

The 28-year-old, from Wilpshire, who is studying hair and media make-up, used fellow student Mel Nelson to model her creation based on the theme Saturday Night at the Movies at the World Skills regional competition.

Liv Payne and her model Ben Slack, who are hair and media make-up students, also entered the body art category.

Both teams were successful in the first round, where they were required to submit photographs of their work plus a design brief.

They were then invited to compete in the second round of regional heats at Wakefield College, West Yorkshire.

These fiercely-fought rounds featured competitors from as far afield as Scotland and Cornwall battling it out for the kudos of a top-three spot.

Katie’s talent was spotted and, out of 14 competitors in the body art section, she claimed a fantastic first place.

She is now excitedly waiting for an invitation to the UK finals, which take place at The Skills Show at Birmingham’s NEC Arena in November, to drop through her letterbox.

It won’t be Katie’s first taste of the national spotlight, as she finished third in the UK finals of the body art section at the Association of Hairdressing Therapist competition, after coming second at the regional event in Blackpool in March.

Ruth Moulden, hair and media make-up lecturer at Blackburn College, has been helping students with competition entries all year.

She said: “I am absolutely ecstatic at how well both students did and I am so proud of what they have achieved.

“It was a lot of hard work but well worth it, with some amazing art work produced. I was literally in tears watching them.”
