THE Green Party's 2015 general election hopeful is among the four candidates contesting the late Pam Barton's council seat.

A by-election was called in the Spring Hill ward of Accrington following Cllr Barton's death on May 5.

Kerry Gormley, who won a 2.6 per cent share of votes in the general election for the Greens, will go up against Labour's Diane Fielding, who is a primary school teaching assistant, Conservative Safdar Mohammad, who was beaten by Cllr Barton's in last year's local election and UKIP's Ken Smith, who stood in the St Oswald's ward last year and finished behind Lisa Allen, who is now the Conservative councillor for the ward.

Voters are expected to take to the polls on Thursday, July 9.

Four polling stations across the ward will be open from 7am until 10pm, the council announced.

Cllr Barton, a mum-of-two who lived in Ormerod Street, Accrington, had represented Spring Hill since 1998 and was the council's health and communities boss.

She also served as the borough’s mayor in 2008/09.
