A PENDLE primary school is to make school uniform compulsory from next September.

The governing body at Trawden Forest Primary has decide from the next academic year, uniform will not only be compulsory but will be enforced for all pupils.

This may involve children being sent home to change or borrow clothing from the school.

School head Karen Hawkins confirmed all pupils and parents will be asked to sign an agreement in September to commit to adhere to the policy. The school does have a uniform but not all children have been wearing it and the policy has not been enforced.

Mrs Hawkins, said: “The uniform policy was introduced last September and I would say there has been almost a 90 per cent take-up by parents.

“The main thing for us is when you see the children in uniform there is no indication of their social background.

“Another benefit is it gives a collective identity.

“While this year some leeway has been allowed in certain cases this year, this will not be the case from September.

“Governors respectfully request parents who have not yet engaged with uniform begin to tackle this issue.”

The school added that if cost is an issue that parents can contact them.

Orjon Ibbotson from Colne has a son at the school. She said: “I am quite happy about the uniform coming in.

“I believe it will stop bulling, especially as kids can sometimes get picked on if they don’t have the latest clothes.

“It looks smarter and saves parents money.”

Studies have suggested wearing a uniform improves pupils’ behaviour inside and outside school.

The Oxford Brookes University survey concluded it is felt uniform makes children better behaved outside the school gates and they were less likely to be bullied for the way they dressed.

Youngsters surveyed also admitted they were less likely to misbehave outside the premises because their uniform instantly identified their school.
