BOSSES at Blackburn’s only bowling alley have announced it is to close.

Staff at Bowlplex said they were told yesterday the Peel Leisure and Retail Park venue in Lower Audley Street will close its doors for the last time on Sunday, June 28.

Bowlplex human resources director Jane Jarvis has written to at least one staff member explaining jobs are at risk of redundancy.

In a letter seen by the Lancashire Telegraph, Jane Jarvis said: “Further to the announcement this morning regarding the closure of Bowlplex Blackburn, I am writing to confirm that your position is now potentially redundant.

“The company very much regrets this course of action, but as discussed this decision has been taken in line with business requirements.

“In all cases of potential redundancy and in line with statutory requirements the company will consult with employees who are impacted to try to alleviate or minimise the consequences of impending redundancy.”

The Lancashire Telegraph understands there are more than 20 employees at the bowling alley.

A member of staff, who wanted to remain anonymous, said: “Jobs on the tech, grill, reception and crew managers will be made redundant.

“The grill had reduced from two shifts to one so some of us guessed it might be on the cards.

“Some of the staff are really disappointed. There were some tears during the announcement and people who have risen through the ranks.

“There are a lot of part-time staff on zero-hours contracts, many of whom are students, but we have been told by the bosses that we will get what we are entitled to.”

In April Electra Partners, which invested £51m in The Original Bowling Company (TOBC) under the Hollywood Bowl and AMF brands, announced it will take over rival Bowlplex.

Founded in 1976, Bowlplex operates 17 ten-pin bowling centres across the UK, primarily located in leisure or retail parks - such as the Peel leisure and Retail Park.

Potugese chicken restaurant chain Nandos announced it will open its first East Lancashire outlet at the business park earlier this year.

The casual dining chain will be part of a redevelopment of the Vue cinema complex, which also houses the Bowlplex bowling alley on the ground floor It is expected to open in December in time for Christmas.

Spokesmen from Bowlplex and Peel Leisure were unavailable for comment.
